1) Non-violence
The first abstinence is the development of a nonviolent attitude to life. People learn to recognize their own anger, aggression, and ignorance. By examining what makes them angry, people can distance themselves from it. By accepting themselves, people give themselves the space to change. They become more loving and more able to restrain themselves from causing pain to other people or things.
